Your plays and files

Find a play in Finder

Right-click a file in the binder and choose Reveal in Finder. To see the location used for all your plays, open Settings → General → Plays folder.

What is in the folder

Fountain (.fountain)

The script, stored as plain text with punctuation that identifies headings, cues and other elements. Comments stay in this file too.

Markdown (.md)

Documents such as research and character notes. These are also plain text.

The .proscenium file

The play’s organization and settings. Keep it with the script and the other files.

Supporting files

Research, imported source documents and other material you have put in the play’s folder.

You can read the text files in another editor. If you edit them there, return to Proscenium and check Changes before continuing.

Move or back up your plays

1. Let Proscenium finish saving. Resolve any save warning before moving files.
2. Close the app, then copy or move the complete play folder in Finder.
3. If you moved the folder that holds all your plays, choose the new location in Settings → General when you reopen Proscenium.

Changing the Plays folder setting does not transfer files for you. Keep the original copy until you have opened the new location and checked the plays.

Your Mac’s backup system can back up the Plays folder. Cloud sync can copy changes between machines, but can also carry deletions and unwanted edits. Keep a separate backup if you need to recover those.

Versions, recovery copies and tutorial practice files live separately in Proscenium’s local app data. Copying a play folder does not copy that local history. See Saving, Versions and sync.
