Cast and opening pages

Write the pages a reader sees before the first scene, and keep your working notes about each character nearby.

Write the Characters page

  1. Open Cast in the toolbar or press ⌘4.
  2. Find Characters Page at the top.
  3. Edit it as you want a reader to see it: names, descriptions and any context the production needs.

Once you edit this page, changes to the working cast list do not replace your text. Keep the printed description in your own words.

Work with the cast

Below the Characters page, Cast Tools shows the people in the play and their appearances. Use Add Character to add someone, and the move controls to change the cast order.

Use Add Notes for working material about a character. These notes belong with your binder documents; they do not become the printed Characters page.

Edit the opening pages

Open the script-name menu and choose Edit Opening Pages…. Work through the title and opening material there. Opening notes can hold a setting, a time and place, a dedication, or another introduction for the reader.

Choose where the opening notes belong relative to the Characters page, then save your changes.

When you export or print, choose which opening pages to include and check them in the preview.

Prepare a character’s sides

In the export dialog, change Part from Whole Script to the character you need. Sides collect that character’s speeches with cue context.

Check the preview before saving the PDF, especially where a speech follows a long direction or a scene change. See Export a PDF or print for the steps.
